In a move aimed at easing access to cooking fuel for vulnerable sections, the Centre has doubled the daily allocation of 5kg free trade LPG (FTL) cylinders meant for migrant labourers across states and Union Territories.
According to an official communication from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the enhanced allocation will be calculated based on the average daily number of cylinders supplied to migrant workers previously. The revised quota goes beyond the earlier cap of 20 per cent set in a March 21 notification.

In a letter addressed to Chief Secretaries of all states and Union Territories, the Ministry said the new allocation is derived from the average daily supply of 5-kg cylinders distributed to migrant labourers during March 2 and 3, 2026. The increase effectively removes the earlier ceiling, allowing states greater flexibility in meeting demand.
The additional cylinders will be placed at the disposal of state governments and their Food and Civil Supplies Departments. Distribution will be carried out exclusively for migrant labourers with logistical support from oil marketing companies (OMCs).
Easier access without address proof
In a parallel relief measure, the government has allowed the sale of 5kg FTL cylinders without requiring address proof. Beneficiaries can now obtain these cylinders from authorised distributors by presenting a valid identity card.
Applicants are required to submit a self-declaration stating their place of stay and confirming that the cylinder will be used solely for cooking purposes. Officials clarified that the scheme is strictly meant for household use and not for commercial consumption.
The government described the measures as part of a broader effort to ensure uninterrupted availability of LPG and other petroleum products, particularly in view of global supply concerns linked to the ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Authorities have also urged citizens to avoid panic buying and unnecessary bookings, advising people to rely only on official communication for updates.
